The Department of Zoology Shri Vitthal Rukhmini Mahavidyalaya Sawana Established in the year, 2009  this Department is offering B.Sc. Programs affiliated to Sant Gadage Baba Amravati University Amravati. Slowly and steadily the department flourished on the path of success throughout these years the department offers UG courses i.e. B.Sc. Course ( 3 years / six semesters) with subject combination of Chemistry, Botany and Zoology with an intake capacity of 120 seats.

Since the establishment of the Department, all the Activities of the Department have run under the umbrella of the Zoological Society including the Animal Protection Unit, Eco-friendly Club, Green Army. The Department is also implementing Entrepreneur-oriented Programmes viz., E.D cell includes Goat raring, poultry rearing. dairy products etc.  This Department has produced many stalwarts in Zoology and contributed greatly to the advancement of the subject. Students of this Department excelled in P.G. Courses in Zoology and are serving in senior positions in Research Institutes and Universities.

This Department has put up excellent contributions in the fields of Entomology, Animal Physiology, Aquaculture and Fisheries, and Sericulture. Set in the Vainganaga Forests of Maharashtra, several outstanding contributions were made to the biodiversity of Spiders, Insects, Molluscs, Amphibians, and Reptiles.  In their endeavor to achieve excellence in Research, our Head of the  Department have described several new species of Spiders Insects,. The faculty member Mr. Anil Khade engaged himself in understanding the role and efficacy of different Botanicals on the larvae of silkworm Bombyx mori and Spodoptera species. This Department is actively pursuing research in Sericulture in evaluating various silkworm Hybrids to test their suitability to the climatic conditions of local areas. Several Technology Programmes have been taken up by the Faculty members of this Department in Entomology. These holistic efforts by our faculty members have started yielding excellent results as on now, every year a minimum of 10 students are getting admission to M.Sc. Zoology.

Faculty members are not leaving behind the slow learners. To infuse confidence and determination in them, they are motivated by conducting remedial classes.  In order to boost the skill development amongst the students, the department regularly conducts Value Added Courses,  vermicomposting, Integrated Pest management using Spiders in the farm, Rearing of Mulberry, and silkworm. Students are further encouraged to take up skill-enhancing training in National level Institutes through Internship Programs.  With a view to increasing the Entrepreneurship activities among our students and farmers, we have made MoU with Maharashtra Centre for Entrepreneurship Development (MCED) Yavatmal, through these structured courses we are promoting the Entrepreneurship activities after completion of this course. These entrepreneurs are registering in SGBAU as Incubates, The University is providing all kinds of technical help and infrastructural help to these incubates.  Department is having collaboration with the Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organization of India and range forest Office Vainganga, Yavatmal and Mahagaon. Under this program, our faculty member biannually visits the Vainganaga and Forest fields of the Yavatmal district.  Our faculty members regularly provide their technical expertise in the fields of Apiculture, Biodiversity, Sericulture, Agriculture especially Pest Management and Pisciculture to, farmers by dissemination of technologies through Trainers’ Training Programmes, Workshops,  Rukshraksha Bandhan, Crisis Management programs, Exhibitions and online guidance to farmers, etc.  Our Faculty members take an active part in various Advisory Bodies viz., Maharashtra State Biodiversity Board, Nagpur, and the National Biodiversity Authority of India. We arrange regular interaction sessions with external faculty, scientists, Government Officers and technocrats from Industry to interact with our students through Guest Lectures.

In collaboration with  MANAV – HUMAN atlas  IISER PUNE, and BOMBAY NATURAL HISTORY SOCIETY (BNHS) we have organized Lecture series in Biology on HOW TO WRITE SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE and on Faunal Biodiversity at this Department during 2019. In this week-long programme eminent Faculty Members from the National Academy of Sciences, India have delivered numerous talks on the latest advances in the emerging fields of Biological Sciences. Department also organized Workshop on Wildlife Photography, by Panob Roy immanent personality in wildlife rescue team of Chhattisgarh   In all these events, we ensure the active participation of students and farmers of our locality. As Yavatmal District is unexplored for faunal biodiversity, every year we conduct workshops on Awareness on Biodiversity and its conservation. During these programs, eminent personalities from the Forest Department of Yavatmal Mrs. Rasika Mogare (RFO) deliver lectures on the importance of Biodiversity and its conservation. During the deliberations, they narrate the students about the threatened species and their conservation techniques. The MoU with forest department also help our students for an organizing tour visit to National Sanctuaries across the country and for earn and learn scheme of forest department by offering a job as Vanmajur (daily wages).
